Professional Assistant Program


Summer 2019 internships have concluded. Applications for summer 2020 professional assistantships will open in early January.

Providing hands-on learning opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students who are getting ready to embark upon a career in professional theatre.

The Professional Assistant Program is designed for advanced theatre students interested in theatre administration careers. Broadway Sacramento’s Academy provides practical experiences in the presentation and production of quality musical theatre. Professional Assistants have the opportunity to enhance their practical knowledge and skills through close interaction with Broadway At Music Circus’ staff. We are looking for mature, self-reliant, articulate students who are able to work effectively in a fast-paced environment. Professional Assistants, who are encouraged to achieve as many career-building goals and objectives as possible, have the opportunity to gain both practical experience and professional contacts through the program. In addition, participants gain further insight into the art of musical theatre with weekly scheduled presentations by guest artists from the Broadway At Music Circus season.

Full-time and Part-time assistantships

Mid-May through August, 30-40 hours/week
$50 per day stipend
College credit
Housing and transportation are not provided

Broadway At Music Circus Professional Assistantship Program offers the opportunity to:

  • Work for Broadway Sacramento, California’s largest nonprofit musical theatre company
  • Join a professional, artistic community and make valuable contacts during our fast-paced Broadway At Music Circus season
  • Gain vital training and mentorship towards a professional career in arts administration
  • Receive insight into the art and operation of professional theatre through weekly guest speakers


DEVELOPMENT (2 positions)

Full-time position. Assist the development department with special events, hospitality lounge and general administrative work. Minimum requirements: knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel and organizational skills as well as an interest in working with the public. Ideal candidates are interested in fundraising and nonprofit arts management. Position starts early May (negotiable).


Full-time position. Assist education department in all summer programs, including patron accessibility and hosting nonprofit organizations at the theater. Other programs include on-site workshops and theatre training for children, teens and adults. Schedule includes some evenings and weekends. Minimum requirements: excellent communication and organization skills, knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel. Ideal candidates are outgoing, able to multi-task, and interested in careers in education, outreach, and/or community engagement. Position starts early June.

MARKETING (2 positions)


(Full-time/Seasonal position) Spend the summer with the close-knit Marketing team for the largest nonprofit musical theatre company in Northern California. This role provides practical applications of the skills you are currently cultivating in school including strong writing and editing proficiency with the creation of press releases and coordination of content for six show playbills. You’ll have field work when accompanying the Director of Marketing and P.R. on media appearances at major TV and radio stations in the market and assisting with photo shoots. Throughout the summer you will attend opening night parties and network with the Music Circus creative team, many of whom are highly renowned in the industry and come directly from Broadway. This role will work directly with graphic designer on publication content and report to marketing manager for daily duties. In a world full of boring widget sales, take an exciting step onto the virtual theatrical stage and learn how to market a product and what it takes to convert interest into sales. Ideal candidate will be a strong writer. An interest in theatre or the performing arts is a plus but not required. Position starts mid-May through mid-August (negotiable).


(Full-time/seasonal position) Are you addicted to your devices? Savvy in all things social media? Do you enjoy great theatrics? Spend your summer diving in fully to the social networking world of the largest musical theatre company in Northern California. Work with the marketing department to develop and curate social media campaigns on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Pinterest, with the possibility of developing other social platforms. Don’t worry you won’t be stuck behind a desk all summer, instead you will assist with and attend opening night parties, media appearances and dance classes as our in-house paparazzi. Are you ready to go out on the town? This position will have a key role in representing the theatre at community events such as the Sacramento PRIDE Festival. Do you like the night life? Attend ticket giveaway events with promotional partners like Drag Queen Bingo and Outword Magazine Happy Hours. Taking it to the streets! Assist with grassroots marketing campaigns, including distribution of heralds and posters throughout the midtown and downtown Sacramento region at farmers markets, galleries, boutiques and more. Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle, be available to work nights and weekends, experience with graphic design and photography a plus. Position starts early June through end of August.


Full-time position. Assist the IT manager with set-up and deployment of computer systems; as well as assist with server maintenance, BYOD support, inventory management and software installations. Ideal candidates are detail orientated, able to prioritize, troubleshoot and are interested in careers in technology. Position starts late May.

Things to Consider

  • Professional Assistants are required to be registered students of American River College. Tuition for the course is covered by Broadway At Music Circus.
  • Professional Assistants are scheduled on average 40 hours per week.
  • Schedules vary depending on the departments, but often include nights and weekends.
  • We do not provide housing.
